You were quite possibly the cutest baby!
Work
I think in this day and age, it is very important and necessary to start working at an early age. I’ve had a job since I was 14 and I still have that job. The majority of my family said that every milestone birthday I have (e.g. 16, 18) that they couldn’t even tell me to gout and geta job, because I’ve always had one. My Dad worked his whole life to ensure that we could live comfortably and Mom held a small job as well, just to help out. I look down upon people who don’t feel the need to work and either use government help or live off of family or friends. I understand in some situations that you are unable to work and that is perfectly fine, but when you are lazy, snap out of it and grow up. Especially in this day and age where a decent salary will barely let you make it by. It is impossible to keep up with the pace, never mind get ahead.
Money
I work because I am an independent person. I only rely on my parents for shelter and sometimes food. I pay for all my own clothes, my phone bill, car insurance, gas, and I occasionally buy food for the house. I feel like my parents have spent enough money on me as a child and that it’s time to grow up. Since I’m 14, I have been eager to earn money and save it. I usually save it and put it in CD’s to gain interest because I rarely find things that I’m willing to spend money on. Sometimes there is the occasional pricey piece of clothing that I want, really, really want, and sometimes I tell myself no. I feel like the more I pay for, the closer I am to being an adult and living on my own without assistance.
American Perspective
I think that as much as the American people think the treatment of the Chinese workers is wrong, they really don’t care. They feel that the Chinese lifestyle doesn’t affect them. They have their own hardships with their jobs, why should they care about someone else in a different country that made the decision to work in that type of environment. In China, they understand that amount of hours and work that goes into the creation of the beads whereas in America, the tradition involving the beads isn’t based on how they are made, but only the in-the-moment use of them.
I was sitting in my chair and my dad comes to sit at his seat at the head of the table, as usual. My sister and my brother sat down in their seats, and at the point, I noticed my dad looked down at his hands. I, along with his eyes, followed his notion and looked down at his hands. They were covered in dirt and cut up from his hard day at work. Just as he was about to get up to wash his hands, my Mom had caught on that I was looking at his hands. It was at the point that she stated many different things in one tiny sentence: “Never come home with your hands looking like this.”
At that point, I just thought that it was time to eat, and that he needed to wash his hands before he devoured the meal. However, I gradually realized that it was his long and hard day at work that caused him his dirty fingertips. I never grasped that if those hands weren’t dirty, then there wouldn’t have been any food for him to sit down to.
As I grew up, my mother continued to keep this thought in my mind. It seemed to be every night that I would find my eyes glancing towards his hands. It got to the point where my mother no longer needed to remind me of his daily struggles that could have been avoided in the first place.
All the presents and gifts don't mean what they should. Christmas and the overall holiday season used to be the season for giving, but now things are too complicated. There was never any drama when it came to this time. Maybe it was always there but I never realized because I was the typical naive kid. I'm not really sure. I miss the excitement on Christmas Eve. I used to have such trouble falling asleep because I was extremely overjoyed and thrilled for the morning to come. I made sure that the milk was there and that the cookies were out just in case Santa was a little hungry or thirsty.
As an adult, the season has turned to nothing but stress and aggravation. I'm sick of shopping and cleaning and decorating and all the senseless stuff that used to be a joy but now has only become something that has to get done.
A popular and well-known political figure has been sweeping the nation. With his skilled use of language and charm, he has taken the hearts, and minds, of many Americans. He has offered the different ways in which we can approach the future. Instead of the traditional ways of leading a country that may or may not have proven to be acceptable, he chooses to lead the country in a more radical manor. If you haven't guessed it by now, that man has been chosen as the democratic candidate for the 2008 Presidential Election, Senator Barack Obama.
Barack Obama consistently captures more and more minds of the American people. His various tactics and techniques aid him in to grasping the public's eyes. Senator Obama, like many political figures do, creates advertisements to appeal to a specific eye. In doing this, he allows himself to gain more supporters in different categories regardless through attracting Americans based on their race, gender, or age. One of the many ways in which Obama tried to appeal to a specific group of people included the use of his music video.
The Obama music video has proven to be a very useful and smart technique. One can infer that the younger voters were his prime intended audience. The video contains many influential people. Some of these people include Will.I.Am, Scarlet Johanson, Kate Walsh, Tatyana Ali, and of course, Barack Obama. Together they sing and praise the idea of hope and power through the very persuasive words “Yes, we can.” These celebrities chant this throughout the video and promote the idea of change hope for a better tomorrow and make it become a necessity. Obama and his campaign editors revealed their cleverness by choosing a melodic approach to reaching out to the younger voting audience. Also, the use of celebrities in the video proved to be a wise choice because the majority of celebrities act as role models, whether it’s through their own publicized experiences, their talents, or their physical appearance. Creating the video with a black and white effect proved to be a good idea because it erases the difference between race and promotes equality. It sounds rather farfetched, but it’s the small steps that contribute to the greater whole. The video is strictly used as a means to get everyone excited and hyped up. It inspires people, but to do what? It provokes them to vote, but for what? If people know the majority of things he stands for, chances are they don’t agree, and if they do agree, more power to them.
Providing Barack Obama spent more time focusing on his plans and relaying the truth about what he wants to do as president, then people will be able to vote for what’s right instead of what seems more appealing. A sense of respect is directed towards the people who vote for him based on his views rather than the silly music video because of the fact that no information is given regarding his future plans as president. As for the people who know nothing about his plans, others deem that group to be uniformed and somewhat phony. People are so pro-Obama and striving for hope in change, yet they have no idea what that entails.
“In other words, being able to dream it has nothing to do with being able to win it. And yet, as they say, hope does seem to spring eternal, and never more so than in America these days. It is, needless to say, Barack Obama who has explicitly put hope way up there on the national agenda and it's been that way since the beginning of his national prominence. ‘Hope in the face of difficulty, hope in the face of uncertainty, the audacity of hope,’ Obama said in his famous speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, using the phrase that got him national attention and became the title of his bestselling campaign book ‘The Audacity of Hope.’ ‘In the end,’ Obama said, ‘that is God's greatest gift to us, the bedrock of this nation, a belief in things not seen, a belief that there are better days ahead.’”(Christensen)
The fact that people will painstakingly fight that Obama is a better choice for president rather than McCain, yet they have no idea what he stands for, reveals how ignorant some Americans can be. A proper analogy to this scenario would be as if Barack Obama says “Jump” and the public of the United States asks “How high?” Due to factors that should not affect a person’s vote, the presidential candidates receive support regardless of their future plans as president. The same thing goes for McCain Supporters who are unaware of what he represents. Voters base their preference on the exterior. McCain’s age and Obama’s skin color affect the majority of the public’s vote.
One of Senator Obama's more popular skills resides in his mouth. No one can deny, and most people agree, that he definitely has a way with words. All of his supporters seem to fall under a spell he casts every time he speaks. He talks and talks and everyone sits in aw as he mesmerizes them as if they were listening to God himself. This can be seen when the camera pans out into the audience in a video during Barack Obama’s speech after the election. However, those who don’t support him feel that he always talks but never has anything to say. He often repeats him by using different words, yet always restating the same subject of matter, but then again, that is a popular technique for pretty much every political figure. He has what many refer to as the gift of gab. He knows how to say what and when to say it.
The fact that he knows how to say what and when to say it acts as a secret weapon, especially throughout the “harsh” debates. The debates represent another significant reason voters appear to be unaware of the candidates’ take on each issue. Basically, the whole debate consists of a catty, back and forth argument that doesn’t relay any important information. If Obama says that he will do something or he did something in the past, McCain will say no you haven’t and vice versa. Obama, like many politicians, uses his slogans and catch phrases about Americans moving forward and hope and change and all the nonsense, that hasn’t been a part of the American culture since the 60’s, in order to capture his supporters.
Persuasive chants and phrases act as a promotion of the idea of unity and help to convey the basic aspects of what life should be like. When you think about it, you can’t move on as a whole with any foundation as a whole. There seems to be too many different aspects of this country that make it impossible to move on from the mess we find ourselves stuck in. As for his future in government, he has a lot of extremely powerful people on his side, which further encores his chances at winning. Oprah’s endorsements and the support of the majority of the people on the cover of People magazine all add up to his success and most probable future as president of the United States. He took a different approach from the other traditional runners for President and that will eventually cause him to win. All in all, Barack Obama’s powerful messages and charismatic ways sway some people and will lead us to his eventual success as President of the United States.

I posted this video because everyone always has so much to say about it. I do agree with most people in saying that it is very inspirational. However, i feel like it takes away from what the presidential elections holds at stake. People get so worked up on the song, but in reality it provides no information whatsoever regarding Obama's plans as president. Unfortunately, the majority of people who vote have no preconception of what either candidate plans to do. They base their opinion on silly songs, such as this, and other stupid performances such as those seen on Saturday Night Live. They serve as a great source of entertainment, but hold no applicable information. This video is vary catchy and appeals to many people with with its use of celebrities and such. All it contains is a promise that no one knows if it can be kept: "Yes We Can".

“As of last September, 8,500 blacks and Puerto Ricans were registered as freshman at the City University of New York, in a total undergraduate enrollment of 155,000. The figure Represents at least on the surface, something of a revolution. Last year’s freshman class included less than half that number, or a total of 3,820 blacks and Puerto Ricans. We are witnessing, in other words, one of the most massive attempts in our history to provide a college education for members of minority groups, many of them from ghetto areas.”

“A Queens College study group made up of student, faculty, and administration representatives has proposed a series of academic and administrative changed to smooth the way for open admissions next fall. The proposals, confirming largely with the recommendations of the City University Task Force on Open Admissions, include a new grading system for freshman, alternate programs for fulfilling degree requirements, the establishment of a Learning Arts Institute for noncredit remedial work and advanced registration for freshmen.”

"Dr. Joseph P. McMurray, president of Queens College, suggested yesterday to a group of educators that private colleges and universities should cooperate with the city and state universities in open admissions to disadvantaged students and that the city and state help finance the program. Addressing more than 400 guests attending the installation of Brother Donald Sullivan as the 10th president of St. Francis College in Brooklyn, Dr. McMurray suggest that the state and city subsidize private colleges and universities accepting students and open admissions by contributing a total of $2,700 a year for each student."

“The four municipal colleges- Brooklyn, City, Hunter, and Queens – open today with a combined freshman class of 5,800 or 500 more than last year. Preliminary registration indicates a total student body of 73,00. Applicants for admission increased 20 percent over those of last year… Preliminary estimates of matriculated day session enrollments in the four institutions stand at 27,000 virtually the same as a year ago. Non-matriculated registrations in the school of general studies and adult education courses indicate an over-all increase of 1,000 to 1,500 students.”
In society, the dominant is identified through certain characteristics that the subaltern lack. In turn, giving the dominant such qualities enforces the dominated to strive to resemble the elite group. Society perceives the dominant to be those with white or lighter skin and those of higher status. Due to society’s depiction of who is the dominant and who are the dominated, we create a division between people in certain races. As seen in the mini-documentary "A Girl Like Me", the whites are perceived to be a model of what other races should emulate. In this relationship, the whites are superior over the blacks. They were perceived as dominant by the minority, and so they remained dominant over the minority. This is a classic representation of Bourdieu’s theory when he stated, "…the dominated perceive the dominant through the categories that the relation of domination has produced and which are thus identical to the interests of the dominant." In the film, a certain number of black girls were interviewed regarding their opinion on society’s depiction of white or lighter skin being more beautiful than darker skin. The fact that those of darker skin use techniques such as bleaching cream to lighten their skin supports the inferior group accepting their role in society as a dominated. When the black girl picked up the white doll, she said it was good, and called it the “nicer doll”. She based her decision solely on the skin color of the dolls. This relayed the common message of whites being the superior race. The young girl already believed, subconsciously, that white people were good and black people were bad. Unfortunately, family, society, and media all instill this universal thought of white supremacy in children at young ages. This customary idea that lighter skin is most excellent is implemented in children so early on in life that they are unable to see beauty through their own eyes, but instead through the eyes of society and the media.
I don't know all too much about her. I only found out she was running with him a few weeks ago. I was shocked that he chose a woman to run as his Vice President. I think it's smart of him to choose a woman to gain more of the female vote. She is or was the Governor of Alaska. I think that she definitely has potential to do a great job in the White House, providing she's not driving her kids to hockey practice or delivering her first granddaughter.
2.)Barack Obama is the Democratic candidate.
Boy, oh boy. This man has caused quite the controversy for the past year or two. I can't blame people for wanting to vote for him. He has the whole package. He has a way with words (through YouTube videos), he's a lot better looking than John McCain, and he's young. However, what are his plans. It seems to be that every time he speaks he comes up with a clever way to get everyone ralled up, yet they have no idea what they are cheering for. To me, he just seems like one of those people who are always talking but never has anything to say.
3.)Election Day takes place in November.
I think this year Election day is November 4th. I very well could be wrong. I do know that it is always the first tuesday after the first Monday of the month. So I guess that means if the first day of November is Tuesday, then Election day is the week after. This year should be interesting. I hope everyone does go out to vote, cause it's only fair. The people who usually complain about the President are the ones who didn't go out and vote 4 years ago.
4.)Obama is pro-abortion.
I hate this topic, but it's one of the few things I do know about this election. Obama thinks that women deserve the option to have an abortion or not. I completely disagree. I know it's a touchy subject and I'm probably going to raise hell for this. However, I don't see why a woman would need to go to such an extent. I understand that sometimes things happen and it's out of your control, but when you have unprotected sex, you're basically asking for a plus sign on a pee stick. My theory is, if you were stupid enough to get yourself pregnant, then you deserve hours of painstaking contractions and delivery. Unfortunately, sometimes it happens through rape and other forced situations, but everything happens for a reason. Just because you won't be able to raise a child, doesn't mean that there isn't a person or couple who can't have children of their own and would love nothing more than to raise a child.
5.Hilary Clinton is not Obama's choice for Vice President.
I was shocked beyond belief when I heard that Clinton wasn't picked to be Obama's Vice President. If he was smart, he would have chose her mainly because anyone who wasn't voting for Hilary was voting for Barack. He would have had a much better chance at winning the election had he chose her. It was funny how throughout the whole campaign process when Hilary was still running for President, herself and Obama were always fighting and throwing off crude comments. However, as soon as Barack won the candidacy, they pretty much became best friends. It just goes to show how fake and staged politics are these days. I don't understand why we can't just have to people to run. I don't want to know what their name is, what race they are, what gender they are or what party they are affiliated with. I just want to know what they are going to do for the people of this country.
