Work

I think in this day and age, it is very important and necessary to start working at an early age.  I’ve had a job since I was 14 and I still have that job.  The majority of my family  said that every milestone birthday I have (e.g. 16, 18) that they couldn’t even tell me to gout and geta job, because I’ve always had one.  My Dad worked his whole life to ensure that we could live comfortably and Mom held a small job as well, just to help out.  I look down upon people who don’t feel the need to work and either use government help or live off of family or friends.  I understand in some situations that you are unable to work and that is perfectly fine, but when you are lazy, snap out of it and grow up.  Especially in this day and age where a decent salary will barely let you make it by.  It is impossible to keep up with the pace, never mind get ahead.

Money

I work because I am an independent person.  I only rely on my parents for shelter and sometimes food.  I pay for all my own clothes, my phone bill, car insurance, gas, and I occasionally buy food for the house.  I feel like my parents have spent enough money on me as a child and that it’s time to grow up.  Since I’m 14, I have been eager to earn money and save it.  I usually save it and put it in CD’s to gain interest because I rarely find things that I’m willing to spend money on.  Sometimes there is the occasional pricey piece of clothing that I want, really, really want, and sometimes I tell myself no.  I feel like the more I pay for, the closer I am to being an adult and living on my own without assistance.

American Perspective

I think that as much as the American people think the treatment of the Chinese workers is wrong, they really don’t care.  They feel that the Chinese lifestyle doesn’t affect them.  They have their own hardships with their jobs, why should they care about someone else in a different country that made the decision to work in that type of environment.  In China, they understand that amount of hours and work that goes into the creation of the beads whereas in America, the tradition involving the beads isn’t based on how they are made, but only the in-the-moment use of them.

I am in college because my parents want me to get an education.  They feel that an education is something that can never be taken away.  Neither of my parents went to college, and at that time, an education wasn’t as important or necessary to get a decent job.  They want things for me that they didn’t have the opportunity to have.  My father did his job to support my family and my mother was raised in an Italian-American household, which held that women take care of the home.  When my father would come home form work, my mother would make me look at my fathers hands – cut up and covered in dirt – and told me never to come home to my wife this way.  Nowadays, you can only get a job that makes a decent amount of money if you go to college and get a degree.  Aside from that fact, I’ve always liked school and I’ve always considered it to be a home away from home.  With out college, I can’t plan for a future.  It almost seems that life has certain steps in a guideline, and college is one of the most important ones.  Sometimes the work load can be difficult and traveling back and forth isn’t a piece of cake, but if it will get me a job that I like doing and would allow me to make a decent salary then so be it.  Back in my parent’s time, you got a job to make money.  It didn’t matter if you liked the job you did.  You did that job to provide for your family.  Now, people can choose a profession based on what they like doing.  Hopefully, I can find what I like to do and eventually make it my profession.  Without college, that would be impossible.

It was roughly 6:30 PM.  My mom was behind the counter stirring mashed potatoes.  The sound of chicken cutlets sizzling in oil on the stove was the underlying sound throughout the house.  The microwave sounded its noise of completion and I helped my mom remove its contents and place it on the dining room table.  My Mom wanted to bring the potatoes to the table considering the danger it may have cause me.  By 6:40 PM, anything that was to be consumed was waiting on the table for my father to come home.  Sure enough, the sound of footsteps overpowered the remaining cutlets in the skillet and gradually grew louder as my father entered the kitchen.

I was sitting in my chair and my dad comes to sit at his seat at the head of the table, as usual.  My sister and my brother sat down in their seats, and at the point, I noticed my dad looked down at his hands.  I, along with his eyes, followed his notion and looked down at his hands.  They were covered in dirt and cut up from his hard day at work.  Just as he was about to get up to wash his hands, my Mom had caught on that I was looking at his hands.  It was at the point that she stated many different things in one tiny sentence: “Never come home with your hands looking like this.”

At that point, I just thought that it was time to eat, and that he needed to wash his hands before he devoured the meal.  However, I gradually realized that it was his long and hard day at work that caused him his dirty fingertips.  I never grasped that if those hands weren’t dirty, then there wouldn’t have been any food for him to sit down to.

As I grew up, my mother continued to keep this thought in my mind.  It seemed to be every night that I would find my eyes glancing towards his hands.  It got to the point where my mother no longer needed to remind me of his daily struggles that could have been avoided in the first place.

Well it's been about a month since I've wrote in here.  There is just too much on my mind.  Then I realized, what better way to figure things out than by writing about them.  This time of year is supposed to be peaceful and joyous.  However, it's been nothing of the sort.  I'm trying to figure out what presents I have, what else I have to buy, who else I have to by for and whatnot.  For my father, I bought him a GPS, a shrimp cleaner, and a wine preserver.  I figured the GPS would be a good gift because we wouldn't have to worry about how to get somewhere and that kind of stuff.  I bought him the shrimp cleaner because he loves shrimp and loves cooking them.  We used to have one but we lost it along the way somewhere, whether it was at a party of someone's house.  I'm not really sure.  I bought the wine preserver because he recently made his own wine with a group of people.  So I figured that it would be a nice little gift.  In addition to all of those gifts, I bought personalized wine labels to put on the bottles after he fills them with wine.  On the top it will have the year and underneath that we planned on calling it "Guido Murphy".  We chose Guido Murphy because my father is an Irishman making Italian wine.  Also, my parents always had a dream to open their own restaurant.  They always said that they would call it Guido Murphy and make it a cross between Italian and Irish cuisine.  Anyway, for my mother, she told me she wanted the Wii Fit game.  So I bought that, and I also bought her one of those digital picture frames that displays a series of pictures from your camera card.  I want to get her a corner piece for the top of the staircase too, because she's been trying to find one for months.  She's also been wanting a 4 draw file cabinet this way we can keep all kinds of papers and documents in a safe place instead of plastered all over the dining room table.  I also wanted to take a picture of her and my father and blow it up and put it in a frame for her room.  For my sister, I bought her a purple sweater dress that she wanted.  I also bought her a long sleeve t-shirt with the 2-fingered peace hand gesture on it in red white and blue.  I also have to get her a hat that she wanted it.  I don't really know how to describe it.  It's a cross between a baret and a beanie hat.  Aside from that, she also wanted an indoor scarf with a series of peace signs on it.  For my brother I didn't go all out because I don't know what he really wants nor do I want to spend a bunch of money if he's not going to appreciate anything.  I bought him a Mets jacket and pants nylon suit.  I think he'd love that seeing as how he is a die hard Mets fan.

All the presents and gifts don't mean what they should.  Christmas and the overall holiday season used to be the season for giving, but now things are too complicated.  There was never any drama when it came to this time.  Maybe it was always there but I never realized because I was the typical naive kid.  I'm not really sure.  I miss the excitement on Christmas Eve.  I used to have such trouble falling asleep because I was extremely overjoyed and thrilled for the morning to come.  I made sure that the milk was there and that the cookies were out just in case Santa was a little hungry or thirsty.

As an adult, the season has turned to nothing but stress and aggravation. I'm sick of shopping and cleaning and decorating and all the senseless stuff that used to be a joy but now has only become something that has to get done.

 Barack Obama: Super Star

A popular and well-known political figure has been sweeping the nation. With his skilled use of language and charm, he has taken the hearts, and minds, of many Americans. He has offered the different ways in which we can approach the future. Instead of the traditional ways of leading a country that may or may not have proven to be acceptable, he chooses to lead the country in a more radical manor. If you haven't guessed it by now, that man has been chosen as the democratic candidate for the 2008 Presidential Election, Senator Barack Obama.

Barack Obama consistently captures more and more minds of the American people. His various tactics and techniques aid him in to grasping the public's eyes. Senator Obama, like many political figures do, creates advertisements to appeal to a specific eye. In doing this, he allows himself to gain more supporters in different categories regardless through attracting Americans based on their race, gender, or age. One of the many ways in which Obama tried to appeal to a specific group of people included the use of his music video.

The Obama music video has proven to be a very useful and smart technique. One can infer that the younger voters were his prime intended audience. The video contains many influential people.  Some of these people include Will.I.Am, Scarlet Johanson, Kate Walsh, Tatyana Ali, and of course, Barack Obama.  Together they sing and praise the idea of hope and power through the very persuasive words “Yes, we can.” These celebrities chant this throughout the video and promote the idea of change hope for a better tomorrow and make it become a necessity. Obama and his campaign editors revealed their cleverness by choosing a melodic approach to reaching out to the younger voting audience. Also, the use of celebrities in the video proved to be a wise choice because the majority of celebrities act as role models, whether it’s through their own publicized experiences, their talents, or their physical appearance. Creating the video with a black and white effect proved to be a good idea because it erases the difference between race and promotes equality. It sounds rather farfetched, but it’s the small steps that contribute to the greater whole. The video is strictly used as a means to get everyone excited and hyped up. It inspires people, but to do what? It provokes them to vote, but for what? If people know the majority of things he stands for, chances are they don’t agree, and if they do agree, more power to them.

Providing Barack Obama spent more time focusing on his plans and relaying the truth about what he wants to do as president, then people will be able to vote for what’s right instead of what seems more appealing. A sense of respect is directed towards the people who vote for him based on his views rather than the silly music video because of the fact that no information is given regarding his future plans as president. As for the people who know nothing about his plans, others deem that group to be uniformed and somewhat phony. People are so pro-Obama and striving for hope in change, yet they have no idea what that entails.

“In other words, being able to dream it has nothing to do with being able to win it. And yet, as they say, hope does seem to spring eternal, and never more so than in America these days.  It is, needless to say, Barack Obama who has explicitly put hope way up there on the national agenda and it's been that way since the beginning of his national prominence.  ‘Hope in the face of difficulty, hope in the face of uncertainty, the audacity of hope,’ Obama said in his famous speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, using the phrase that got him national attention and became the title of his bestselling campaign book ‘The Audacity of Hope.’  ‘In the end,’ Obama said, ‘that is God's greatest gift to us, the bedrock of this nation, a belief in things not seen, a belief that there are better days ahead.’”(Christensen)

The fact that people will painstakingly fight that Obama is a better choice for president rather than McCain, yet they have no idea what he stands for, reveals how ignorant some Americans can be. A proper analogy to this scenario would be as if Barack Obama says “Jump” and the public of the United States asks “How high?”  Due to factors that should not affect a person’s vote, the presidential candidates receive support regardless of their future plans as president.  The same thing goes for McCain Supporters who are unaware of what he represents. Voters base their preference on the exterior. McCain’s age and Obama’s skin color affect the majority of the public’s vote.

One of Senator Obama's more popular skills resides in his mouth.  No one can deny, and most people agree, that he definitely has a way with words. All of his supporters seem to fall under a spell he casts every time he speaks. He talks and talks and everyone sits in aw as he mesmerizes them as if they were listening to God himself. This can be seen when the camera pans out into the audience in a video during Barack Obama’s speech after the election.  However, those who don’t support him feel that he always talks but never has anything to say. He often repeats him by using different words, yet always restating the same subject of matter, but then again, that is a popular technique for pretty much every political figure. He has what many refer to as the gift of gab. He knows how to say what and when to say it.

The fact that he knows how to say what and when to say it acts as a secret weapon, especially throughout the “harsh” debates. The debates represent another significant reason voters appear to be unaware of the candidates’ take on each issue. Basically, the whole debate consists of a catty, back and forth argument that doesn’t relay any important information. If Obama says that he will do something or he did something in the past, McCain will say no you haven’t and vice versa. Obama, like many politicians, uses his slogans and catch phrases about Americans moving forward and hope and change and all the nonsense, that hasn’t been a part of the American culture since the 60’s, in order to capture his supporters.

Persuasive chants and phrases act as a promotion of the idea of unity and help to convey the basic aspects of what life should be like. When you think about it, you can’t move on as a whole with any foundation as a whole. There seems to be too many different aspects of this country that make it impossible to move on from the mess we find ourselves stuck in. As for his future in government, he has a lot of extremely powerful people on his side, which further encores his chances at winning. Oprah’s endorsements and the support of the majority of the people on the cover of People magazine all add up to his success and most probable future as president of the United States. He took a different approach from the other traditional runners for President and that will eventually cause him to win. All in all, Barack Obama’s powerful messages and charismatic ways sway some people and will lead us to his eventual success as President of the United States.

Somewhat of a Revision

Stupid little chants and phrases are used to promote the idea of unity and to convey the basic aspects of what life should be like. I'd rather listen to a boring bulleted list of what he plants to do for this country instead of fill me with hope and not deliver in the end. "Yes We Can... Deceive America"

However, the majority of people who know of this video and plan on voting for him, know nothing about his future plans as president. All they know is that he’s going to change things – whether it’s for better or for worse. I make it sound like a wedding vow.

Anyway, I think if he spent more time focusing on his plans and relaying the truth about what he wants to do as president, then people will be able to vote for what’s right instead of what seems more appealing. Everyone gets so excited about those three stupid words that they don’t care to look past the glamour and focus on what is really important. I think at this point in the game, people only vote for him because he’s not the average expected candidate. I respect the people who vote for him based on his views rather than the silly music videos and stuff like that. Interview With a Co-Worker

  • Oct. 26th, 2008 at 9:50 PM

On Saturday I had casually started a conversation about the election with a female co-worker of mine. We initiated the "convo" with the age old question, "So, who are you gunna vote for?" She has said that she was voting for McCain. We were going back and forth with the basic issues and our own views. Then we has tried to match up which candidates shared the same views as we did. We had both talked about the various things hat affected the election. We both agreed that the attributes of Saturday Night Live and other shows heavily sway the votes of the public as a whole. People say that no one knows anything about Sarah Palin, however, the majority of people who are voting for Barack Obama know nothing about Joe Biden. We were also talking about the types of people who will vote for each candidate. We both feel that the majority of Barack's supporters are younger whereas the majority of McCains supporters are older. The conversation was pretty much botched because we has to work and associate with customers throughout the whole process, but I tried to gain as much information as possible. Unfortunately, not much was data was taken in.

DEFINAELY harder than is seemed.

Barack Obama and John McCain walk into a bar in Manhattan and they were peacefully catching up on their governmental gossip. They were conspiring to jack Hilary’s flawless shoes. All of a sudden, Farhana deceivingly takes Hilary’s shoes from Barack Obama and stuffs them in her pockets. She ignorantly destroyed any money she gained from selling Hilary’s shoes on eBay. John McCain truly controlled the customers by using his comedic ways in order to keep everyone form going insane. Later on, Barack stole a skirt, which was unfair. He was immaturely lying to Hollister about stealing the skirt. John McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin was corruptly abusing her powers to use expired coupons. After her abuse of power, McCain falsely obliterated any department stores that felt she was a poor role model. For that reason, she was undecidedly imprisoned because of the clothes she unlawfully bought. Palin was then harmfully punished when was found stealing food from the other inmates. Barack conniving deceived the malls because he was in fact, the perpetrator of Palin’s crimes. He was suspiciously corrupting the shopping lists of local shoppers in order to keep as many clothes as he wanted for himself. He equally infected the shopping carts as well as the shopping lists. John McCain then politically incorrectly attacked the jeans that Barack was wearing during one of his debates. He said they should have been nonexistent because of all his cheating which is clearly seen from the bags under his eyes.

Yes We Can...

  • Oct. 19th, 2008 at 11:24 AM

I posted this video because everyone always has so much to say about it. I do agree with most people in saying that it is very inspirational. However, i feel like it takes away from what the presidential elections holds at stake. People get so worked up on the song, but in reality it provides no information whatsoever regarding Obama's plans as president. Unfortunately, the majority of people who vote have no preconception of what either candidate plans to do. They base their opinion on silly songs, such as this, and other stupid performances such as those seen on Saturday Night Live. They serve as a great source of entertainment, but hold no applicable information. This video is vary catchy and appeals to many people with with its use of celebrities and such. All it contains is a promise that no one knows if it can be kept: "Yes We Can".

Report Card On Open Admissions: Remedial Work Recommended
By SOLOMON RESNIK and BARBARA KAPLAN
New York Times (1857-Current file); May 9, 1971; ProQuest Historical Newspapers The New York Times (1851 - 2005)
pg. SM26

“As of last September, 8,500 blacks and Puerto Ricans were registered as freshman at the City University of New York, in a total undergraduate enrollment of 155,000. The figure Represents at least on the surface, something of a revolution. Last year’s freshman class included less than half that number, or a total of 3,820 blacks and Puerto Ricans. We are witnessing, in other words, one of the most massive attempts in our history to provide a college education for members of minority groups, many of them from ghetto areas.”

PLAN URGED TO AID OPEN ADMISSIONS
By ROBERT D. McFADDEN
New York Times (1857-Current file); Feb 15, 1970; ProQuest Historical Newspapers The New York Times (1851 - 2005)
pg. 31

“A Queens College study group made up of student, faculty, and administration representatives has proposed a series of academic and administrative changed to smooth the way for open admissions next fall. The proposals, confirming largely with the recommendations of the City University Task Force on Open Admissions, include a new grading system for freshman, alternate programs for fulfilling degree requirements, the establishment of a Learning Arts Institute for noncredit remedial work and advanced registration for freshmen.”

OPEN ADMISSIONS HELD TOO LIMITED
By M. S. HANDLER
New York Times (1857-Current file); Dec 9, 1969; ProQuest Historical Newspapers The New York Times (1851 - 2005
pg. 26

"Dr. Joseph P. McMurray, president of Queens College, suggested yesterday to a group of educators that private colleges and universities should cooperate with the city and state universities in open admissions to disadvantaged students and that the city and state help finance the program. Addressing more than 400 guests attending the installation of Brother Donald Sullivan as the 10th president of St. Francis College in Brooklyn, Dr. McMurray suggest that the state and city subsidize private colleges and universities accepting students and open admissions by contributing a total of $2,700 a year for each student."

4 CITY COLLEGES SET FOR 5,800 FRESHMEN
New York Times (1857-Current file); Sep 19, 1955; ProQuest Historical Newspapers The New York Times (1851 - 2005)
pg. 27

“The four municipal colleges- Brooklyn, City, Hunter, and Queens – open today with a combined freshman class of 5,800 or 500 more than last year. Preliminary registration indicates a total student body of 73,00. Applicants for admission increased 20 percent over those of last year… Preliminary estimates of matriculated day session enrollments in the four institutions stand at 27,000 virtually the same as a year ago. Non-matriculated registrations in the school of general studies and adult education courses indicate an over-all increase of 1,000 to 1,500 students.”

Entry #8 - Just A Reflection

  • Sep. 19th, 2008 at 9:40 AM

I'm sitting n the computer lab trying to kill time. My class doesn't start for another 35 minutes. I figured why no pay a little visit to my blog. It seems like it's been a long time. I saw my Grandma yesterday for the first time in a week. She went on vacation to Italy to see her family, it sounds bad, but before they croak. I usually see her at least once a week and knowing that I wasn't able to see her at any given moment was a little scary. So my brother and my mother and I all went to visit. One of my uncles was there with his four kids, another uncle was there, and 2 of my other cousins were there as well. We had such a good time catching up and they were all flashing back to the past. My mom was telling me about how her father used to make his own wine and everyone had their own job in the process. My Uncle Michael was telling me how he got his finger caught in the sea-saw and my his grandmother whipped out some thread and a needled and gave him stitches right there on the spot. My Uncle Italo was telling me how when he broke his arm his grandmother set it by herself. Granted, she did it wrong and he had to to go the hospital to get it fixed, but she tried. All these stories had me thinking of all the good times that I've shared with my family at the dinner table. We still reminisce about the funniest stories or even the stories that weren't funny at the moment, but with time grew to become humorous. I have to get to class but I'll continue this later. CIAO!

Rough Draft - PIE Paragraph

  • Sep. 15th, 2008 at 4:53 PM

Okay. Here is my idea of what the paragraph should consist of. My group; you are more than welcome to change whatever you see fit. Any discrepancies, you can IM me on aim. My screen name is xdilldamanx.

In society, the dominant is identified through certain characteristics that the subaltern lack. In turn, giving the dominant such qualities enforces the dominated to strive to resemble the elite group. Society perceives the dominant to be those with white or lighter skin and those of higher status. Due to society’s depiction of who is the dominant and who are the dominated, we create a division between people in certain races. As seen in the mini-documentary "A Girl Like Me", the whites are perceived to be a model of what other races should emulate. In this relationship, the whites are superior over the blacks. They were perceived as dominant by the minority, and so they remained dominant over the minority. This is a classic representation of Bourdieu’s theory when he stated, "…the dominated perceive the dominant through the categories that the relation of domination has produced and which are thus identical to the interests of the dominant." In the film, a certain number of black girls were interviewed regarding their opinion on society’s depiction of white or lighter skin being more beautiful than darker skin. The fact that those of darker skin use techniques such as bleaching cream to lighten their skin supports the inferior group accepting their role in society as a dominated. When the black girl picked up the white doll, she said it was good, and called it the “nicer doll”. She based her decision solely on the skin color of the dolls. This relayed the common message of whites being the superior race. The young girl already believed, subconsciously, that white people were good and black people were bad. Unfortunately, family, society, and media all instill this universal thought of white supremacy in children at young ages. This customary idea that lighter skin is most excellent is implemented in children so early on in life that they are unable to see beauty through their own eyes, but instead through the eyes of society and the media.

Entry #7 - 5 Five-Minute Free Write

  • Sep. 14th, 2008 at 10:35 AM

1.)McCain's running mate is Sarah Palin.
I don't know all too much about her. I only found out she was running with him a few weeks ago. I was shocked that he chose a woman to run as his Vice President. I think it's smart of him to choose a woman to gain more of the female vote. She is or was the Governor of Alaska. I think that she definitely has potential to do a great job in the White House, providing she's not driving her kids to hockey practice or delivering her first granddaughter.

2.)Barack Obama is the Democratic candidate.
Boy, oh boy. This man has caused quite the controversy for the past year or two. I can't blame people for wanting to vote for him. He has the whole package. He has a way with words (through YouTube videos), he's a lot better looking than John McCain, and he's young. However, what are his plans. It seems to be that every time he speaks he comes up with a clever way to get everyone ralled up, yet they have no idea what they are cheering for. To me, he just seems like one of those people who are always talking but never has anything to say.

3.)Election Day takes place in November.
I think this year Election day is November 4th. I very well could be wrong. I do know that it is always the first tuesday after the first Monday of the month. So I guess that means if the first day of November is Tuesday, then Election day is the week after. This year should be interesting. I hope everyone does go out to vote, cause it's only fair. The people who usually complain about the President are the ones who didn't go out and vote 4 years ago.

4.)Obama is pro-abortion.
I hate this topic, but it's one of the few things I do know about this election. Obama thinks that women deserve the option to have an abortion or not. I completely disagree. I know it's a touchy subject and I'm probably going to raise hell for this. However, I don't see why a woman would need to go to such an extent. I understand that sometimes things happen and it's out of your control, but when you have unprotected sex, you're basically asking for a plus sign on a pee stick. My theory is, if you were stupid enough to get yourself pregnant, then you deserve hours of painstaking contractions and delivery. Unfortunately, sometimes it happens through rape and other forced situations, but everything happens for a reason. Just because you won't be able to raise a child, doesn't mean that there isn't a person or couple who can't have children of their own and would love nothing more than to raise a child.

5.Hilary Clinton is not Obama's choice for Vice President.
I was shocked beyond belief when I heard that Clinton wasn't picked to be Obama's Vice President. If he was smart, he would have chose her mainly because anyone who wasn't voting for Hilary was voting for Barack. He would have had a much better chance at winning the election had he chose her. It was funny how throughout the whole campaign process when Hilary was still running for President, herself and Obama were always fighting and throwing off crude comments. However, as soon as Barack won the candidacy, they pretty much became best friends. It just goes to show how fake and staged politics are these days. I don't understand why we can't just have to people to run. I don't want to know what their name is, what race they are, what gender they are or what party they are affiliated with. I just want to know what they are going to do for the people of this country.

Entry #6 - Response To MySpace Links

  • Sep. 9th, 2008 at 1:55 PM

PROFILE ONE: http://www.myspace.com/johnmccain
  • After perusing through the page, I had came to a few conclusions. I felt that McCain's MySpace was very patriotic. It consisted of the obvious red, white and blue color scheme. Aside from his American pride, he clearly displays his plans for addressing the issues we face as a country. If you click the link, an in-depth analysis of the problems and the plans to fix them is given. I supposed the only purpose of John McCain having a MySpace would be to appeal to younger voters seeing as how the majority of people voting for him don't know what a computer is. I did notice that he has a significantly lower amount of friends and comments compared to Obama's page. I did notice that on the first page of comments, the only people to comment were relatively young white heterosexual couples. I was surprised to see that Gov. Palin wasn't posted in any pictures or even mentioned. I think that she is a major reason why he will get a big portion of his votes. Wouldn't it make sense to plaster her all over his MySpace to encourage younger female voters to vote for him?

    PROFILE TWO: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=4432916

  • Different aspects of this profile please both the part of me that believes it is plausible and the part of me that believes it's fake. I honestly believe that this profile is fake. I find it odd that a person in the army would actually be able to bring a digital camera to the war and take pictures. Some may propose that photographers take pictures there all the time. They sure do, but how would those pictures wind up on "BullMooseBells'" MySpace? I kind of feel that the "About Me" section and the "Who I'd Like To Meet" section are quite overdone. I think if a person was in the army, they would tell more about their family and the life they miss, not the grotesque parts of war. It seems staged. There were only two pictures that expressed American pride. Aside from that, the layout is basic, the pictures of guns are cliché, and the video of the tank is pushing it. The only part of the profile that leads me to believe it could be real is the fact that all his friends know he was in the war. His comments clearly express the simple fact that he really could be in the war.

    PROFILE THREE: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=117227221

  • This profile is just as plausible as BullMooseBells' profile. I want to believe that these profiles are real, but something tells me they're not. I don't really know what is holding me back. It's a little odd that all of his pictures are from Iraq. Most importantly, there was no sense of American pride posted by "Madd Dawgs" himself, but only by his friends through pictures in comments. I think the background adds to its believability, however the "About Me" section throws me off. About Me is supposed to explain who you are, not that you're going to give out as much information regarding the war as you can without getting in trouble from the government. I went to take the quiz, and to my surprise, every question was about the war. Once again, people would know more about you as a person and not about your affiliations with the war in Iraq. However, this does lead me to believe that if people are earning relatively high scores on this quiz, then they must know a lot about him. His participation the war seems more plausible since his friends know the specifics of his enrollment in the army. So maybe this profile could be a little more believable than BullMooseBells'.

    PROFILE FOUR: http://www.myspace.com/barackobama

  • Obama's profile amuses me. I like how the profile is closer to a basic MySpace page, but there are non-stop promotions for his official website. This sends you directly to his main campaign page. On here you can find his ideas and solutions to issues we face as a country. I read his solutions and I was surprised by them. I thought he would have paragraphs and pages worth of answers, but instead, everything was a maximum amount of one paragraph. Some answers were even one sentence long. I was not surprised to find that Obama's first 3 top friends consisted of Africans, Pacific Islanders and Latinos for Obama. The profile did consist of enough red, white, and blue to pass the pride test. Unfortunately, I felt like there were so many links that all lead back to one place. The same place that held all the one-sentence answers that barely touched on the subjects at hand. I was very surprised to not come across one picture of him with his wife and family. Since he's such a family man, I would think he would have a plethora of pictures with his family.

    PROFILE FIVE:
    http://groups.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=groups.groupProfile&groupID=106896194&MyToken=0183d729-0266-49a9-8e6b-240038056f3e

  • When I first read this passage, I nearly fell of my seat. At first I couldn't understand what exactly she was saying, but after going back I got a better understanding. The text gave us the true meaning of the "N" word. I was surprised to see that the person who posted this didn't look African whatsoever. As for a sense of patriotism, the only thing I noticed was some type of seal as the background. It was very faint impossible to see what it really was, but the blogger took the time to give it some sense of American Pride. Also, the video underneath the text was a clear representation of patriotism. I didn't really sense the connection between the senses of patriotism and the context of the passage.

    PROFILE SIX:
    http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=158641041&blogID=315730544

  • This profile was by far the most shocking. I guess my feelings were automatically provoked because of the topic itself. I feel that this is a sad attempt to relieve the KKK of their harsh past and give them a new name in society today. The only bit of patriotism I sensed was the references to the American doctrines and documents. I did notice a vast amount of grammatical and spelling errors. With that in mind it was difficult for me to actually believe what the blogger was saying and whether his facts were true, or just made up to sounds like they could be believable enough to be deemed true.

  • According to officials, a mass amount of German zombies are invading the eastern coast of the United States. Researchers believe that these so called zombies are in search of Hurricane Gustav and will contribute to its damages. Officials were able to get in contact with the Germans and were able to find out the cause of the invasion. Apparently, the zombies are retaliating against the Americans for their use of the German name Gustav. They feel that the hurricane's name is mocking the German culture and expressing them as violent. In an analogical attempt to portray the effects of the hurricane, the zombies are causing damage to properties and even taking lives as a way to show the true violence a "German" hurricane can create. To prevent another hurricane from being called a name of the German heritage, the Germans aligned the fallen trees and debris of buildings spelling out "If I Had a Hammer" across a field in southern Louisiana. Psychologists believe that the message expresses an older form of American culture. The song, If I had a Hammer by Peter, Paul, and Mary, tells of a person possessing a hammer and what he or she would do with it. In the lyrics, the person claims that they will hammer in the morning, hammer in the evening, all over this land. They will hammer out danger, and a warning, and love between "my brothers and my sisters" all over this land. Analysts believe that these are common possibilities one might do as part of the average American culture. They have also found that the names of the performers, Peter, Paul and Mary, are all common names found in the United States. This may be a way to urge Americans to stick to naming hurricanes and other natural disasters names within their own culture. As an American effort to prove to the Germans that we are through with the use of German cultures, they have named the expected storm that plans to hit New York, The "Long Island Express". This name mocks the Long Island Expressway, a major New York highway. The storm is expected to severely damage Montauk to Flushing as well as Manhattan to Astoria. The general date of the storm's expectancy is unknown. However, U.S. officials affirm that there will be no reason for threats from other countries, especially Germany.
